Pre-, Post-Operative and Post-Injury Physiotherapy

Pre-operative physiotherapy

Physiotherapy also has its place in planned surgeries (especially surgical and orthopaedic ones). Pre-operative rehabilitation is a significant part of preparation for the planned surgical procedure itself. Its goal is to prepare the patient as well as possible for the surgery and the post-operative period. After an examination and assessment of the overall condition, a rehabilitation programme will be set for the following period.

Pre-, post-operative and post-injury physiotherapy

In this phase you will learn how to:

  • exercise correctly even before the procedure itself
  • improve your current fitness
  • ease your muscle imbalance and thereby improve the function of the musculoskeletal system, preparing suitable ground for the surgeon

You will also learn about the importance of exercise before and after surgery, positioning, other possible physiotherapy procedures, and the overall daily routine in the subsequent post-operative phase. Such preparation is a prerequisite for better and easier management of the post-operative period.

Post-operative and post-injury physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is an integral part of the treatment process in the case of planned as well as urgent surgeries, and after injuries treated conservatively (with a cast, immobilization) or surgically.

For the optimal design of a physiotherapy plan and programme, cooperation is needed between specialists — the surgeon, traumatologist and FBLR physician — and the physiotherapist. The course of rehabilitation is always individual — given the wide range of diagnoses that fall into this category (post-surgery, post-injury conditions), it can vary depending on the extent of the damage, the trauma, the surgical procedure itself, the healing process and course, and the overall current condition.

The surgery itself disrupts the integrity of the body (during it, not only the subcutaneous tissue, fasciae, blood vessels and muscles are affected, but many other systems change too). Therapeutic exercise, or LTV, has a positive effect on many of these negative consequences.

In general, LTV in this phase:

  • restores lost or limited function
  • supports proper joint mobility
  • improves coordination and muscle strength
  • ensures normal circulation
  • acts preventively against adhesions, muscle contractures and other complications
  • adequate movement mobilizes protein reserves, improves wound healing, and thanks to circulatory and breathing exercises reduces the risk of thromboembolic disease and pneumonia
  • also has a positive effect on the patient's psyche
  • contributes to regaining self-sufficiency and self-care

The first phase of post-operative/post-injury rehabilitation care usually begins while still in hospital during hospitalization, and after discharge home, an outpatient phase should follow seamlessly, which we also provide at our physio & care - MEDICAL CENTER healthcare facility. This period includes not only individual kinesiotherapy (treatment through movement), but often also manual techniques in the sense of mobilizations and release techniques, frequently supplemented with physical therapy procedures or kinesio taping.
